National Certification Exam

The National Certification Exam for Massage and Bodywork is an exam that was developed in the 1990's under the mandate of the AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association). It is a written test only and does not have a practicum. The exam requires graduation from a program of at least 500 hours of study.

The recognition of the exam varies by state and municipality. Although the exam is not required by most states, it's can be helpful if you are considering moving to another state in the future. It can also be used to demonstrate your commitment to your professionalism.

It is recommended that you take the exam as close to your graduation as possible. The exam focuses on terminology. If you are like most people, retention of terms is difficult so the sooner you take the exam, the better.

Be sure to read the link for the NCBTMB policy on criminal background checks ( http://www.spatech.edu/ncbtmb-crime-policy.html ). Remember, the exam is not required in most states but it is important to know, from the beginning, that you may have eligibility issues if you have a criminal record. This may also impact your ability to get licensed in the future.

NCBTMB Crime Policy

NCBTMB Criminal Backgound Check Policy Statement as of 10/2008

We receive many inquiries from schools regarding the effect that a student's past criminal conviction(s) will have on that student's eligibility to sit for the national certification examination (NCE). NCBTMB's policy concerning criminal convictions is the basis for all eligibility decisions made regarding an Applicant's background.

An Applicant convicted of any of the following crimes will be denied certification in all cases:
· A felony crime involving sexual or physical abuse
· A guilty plea or conviction for a misdemeanor or felony crime involving prostitution
· Serious crimes of violence against persons including, but not limited to, murder, attempted murder,
manslaughter (not including involuntary manslaughter), kidnapping, arson, rape and assault or battery with
a dangerous weapon
· Felonies in which Applicants remain on work release, on supervised probation or on parole

In cases where an Applicant has been convicted of any of the following crimes, but can show by clear and convincing evidence that his/her certification will not endanger public safety, NCBTMB will make a case-by-case decision as to whether the Applicant will be allowed to sit for the NCE.
· Crimes involving illegal drugs and/or controlled substances
· A crime involving sexual misconduct
· Serious crimes such as grand larceny, burglary, embezzlement or fraud

If an Applicant has been convicted of a crime not mentioned above, NCBTMB considers the following factors in deciding whether the Applicant should be allowed to sit for the NCE:
· The seriousness of the crime
· Whether or not the crime was violent in nature
· Whether the Applicant has multiple convictions
· Whether the crime involved a minor, the elderly, or a person of diminished capacity
· How much time has elapsed since the crime was committed
· Whether the crime relates to patient care
· Whether the Applicant was truthful and not misleading in explaining the terms and circumstances of their
felony or misdemeanor conviction

NCBTMB reserves the right to deny or allow Applicants to sit for the NCE based on information provided to it in an Applicant's application. However, schools should consider this information when providing guidance to students who are contemplating national certification but who have been convicted of, or pled guilty to, a crime. If students are denied due to NCBTMB policy regarding criminal convictions, they do have the right to appeal the decision in writing to the Ethics & Standards Committee.
