Graduate Spotlight May 2017 Beth Mitchell

Spa Tech • Apr 23, 2017

You will find Beth in a beautiful space above a Dentist office located at 640 Brighton Ave, Portland Maine. She shares her space with fellow Spa Tech Institute graduate Kate Devine. The two make up the practice called Massage Therapy of Portland.

Beth’s bachelor’s degree is in Kinesiology and she has always been interested in fitness. This had traditionally been a hobby for Beth but she recently became more involved with physical training. Beth says that most people that have their undergrad in Kinesiology went on to get their masters but that was not the path for her. She got married and had childrenand when she reentered the work-force ended up in financial services. This was how she landed a marketing position and started building contacts which eventually lead her to own her own marketing firm. The financial climate eventually changed and after 20 years in that line of business, Beth was ready to follow her original passion and started exploring the possibility of becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist.

Beth met with admissions officer Amy Woodson and signed up for the program two different times over the span of five years before actually starting the program on her third try. Life kept getting in the way of her moving forward on this path. It was a combination of the relationship that Beth developed with Amy, the support of her husband and knowledge that she wanted to expand her knowledge of bodywork that pushed Beth towards attaining her goal.

Beth used the contacts she made through her massage program to generate some great opportunities professionally. She has been contracted by UNE to do chair massage at wellness events for staff and graduate students.

She works at a chiropractor’s office on an as needed basis. Finally her school mate Kate Devine has become Beth’s business partner in Portland Massage Therapists. Beth knew she was going to be independent when she left school and feels that it is very important for potential students to be aware that communication skills and an engaging personality go a long way towards paving your path towards success.
